«He plays piano like a raga… the next Keith Jarrett» Trilok Gurtu
«Tigran is amazing, he's my teacher now!» Herbie Hancock
Our JAW Family is really thrilled to join forces with Berlin cultural institution HAU Hebbel am Ufer to present one of the most gifted musicians of his generation, Armenian pianist Tigran Hamasyan, for his long overdue comeback in Berlin after almost three years.
An internationally acclaimed pianist and composter, Tigran Hamasyan's style is mystifying and distinct from other current jazz musicians. From Armenian folk to sacred music, Tigran brings his modern and attractive twist of the music he grew up surrounded by. This impressionistic style effortlessly weaves the traditional folk themes with his jazz improvisation. His music is fresh and youthful, but highlights the central elements of such long-standing music. Among his esteemed supporters are no less than Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Gilles Peterson or Brainfeeder bassist & singer Thundercat.
Tigran's most recent album 'An Ancient Observer', released last year, has inspiration from classical Baroque to jazz and Armenian folklore music that fall into his unique composition. Keeping you on your toes and making you notice the clever little subtleties; a seamless combination of rock and jazz movement within ethereal space. Commenting on his release, Tigran states «these pieces are musical observations of the world we live in today and the burden of the story we carry around with us.» Released only a month ago, EP 'For Gyumri' compliments the latest album with romantic and irresistibly poignant tracks.
