Lecture: Freddi Williams Evans: Congo Square. African Culture in New Orleans
The prize-winning author talks about the square where, in the 18th and 19th century, enslaved and liberated Africans and their descendents laid the foundation stone for African-American music culture.

Panel: Tracing Roots and Breaking Ground in Sonic Afromodernity, with Louis Chude-Sokei, Cheryl Keyes, Martin Munro and Chris Johnson
Continuities, breaks, cultural heritage, or innovation—how does the history of African-American music relate to the African diaspora? How has Black culture shaped the sound of modernity?

Lecture: He Zhao (dj zhao): The Beat Continuum: The Socio-Political Evolution of Rhythm
The anarcho-musicologist examines the relationship of social dance cultures to hierarchical social organization, and the impact of colonialism on the mutation of African rhythms in the Americas.

Panel: Global Pulse: Processes of Transfer and Transformation, with Stefanie Alisch, Flowking Stone, He Zhao and Angie Balata
The pulse of the backbeat is omnipresent in Pop music. How can global musical innovation be understood as the result of migration? What role does the beat play in global musical history?

Installations:
Anke Eckardt: Vinylheads (2018)
The audible, walk-in sculptures Vinylheads from Anke Eckardt are connected by a sample of the Amen Break.

Hanno Leichtmann: Skin, Wood, Traps (2018)
For Skin, Wood, Traps, Hanno Leichtmann assembles drum and percussion loops from inspiring drummers to create a 4-channel sound installation
