Anke Eckardt, Hanno Leichtmann
Based in Cairo, the singer and percussionist explores the music of Sudan, her homeland, on the dalooka and the tar frame-drum—from Nubian folk to East African Zar. As a member of the Nile Project collective, she establishes a dialog between musical traditions— from Rwanda to Egypt.
Goat plays complex rhythmic structures so precisely that they sound programmed—Minimal Techno without electronics. The quartet from Osaka, Japan, disregard the typical Rock music characteristics of their instruments—guitar, bass, drums, and saxophone—emphasizing repetition instead of melody, employing a stoically hammering bass drum and atonal harmonies.
Talvin Singh / Seb Rochford / Budgie
Percussion extravaganza with underground pioneers: Singh’s fusion of tabla and Electronica founded the Asian Underground. Rochford leads the experimental Jazz band Polar Bear and has worked with Brian Eno and Herbie Hancock. Budgie’s legendary drum style— with the Slits and Siouxsie and the Banshees— infused Post-Punk with Reggae and Funk elements.
Ashanti rhythms, Frafra gospel, Highlife, local traditions, and new hybrids: With the Hiplife rapper Flowking Stone and Guy One, a master on the Kologo lute, the Berlin-based drummer and beat researcher, Max Weissenfeldt, has assembled a 16-person supergroup embodying Ghana’s musical diversity.
With a polycultural perspective on rhythm and the fusion of ancient and hyper-modern, the Beijing-born Berliner shares his musical vision of a possible future pluralist egalitarianism.
