The 'Sonic Bed' is an oversized king sized bed with bespoke 12 channel sound system immersed beneath its lush upholstery sunk in a hand built wooden cabinet. Visitors are invited to remove their shoes and come lie on and be wrapped in vibrations that sculpt themselves around you in ever changing paths of vibration. Subtle, dynamic, at times beyond hearing, 'Sonic Bed' plays music to feel rather than just listen to.
'Sonic Bed' is an instrument, to be used by anyone who is interested as well as commissioned composers to make pieces for it. To create this music, a specially developed software interface has been built with David Muth and is developed through 'music for bodies' research (musicforbodies.net)
Six such Beds have been so far made worldwide. This is the original version, 'Sonic Bed_London (2005)', commissioned by Electra for Her Noise 2005, supported by the Arts Council of England and Women in Music nad built by Craig Helliwell. It is a central pin in music for bodies research and was awarded a Distinction in Digital Musics, Prix Ars Electronica, 2006.
It was conceived and designed by Kaffe Matthews, and its success has spawned the ongoing Worldwide Bed Project.
