There is a constant discussion going on between us, materials and objects everyday, which we quite often ignore. The materials and objects that surround us have also a life of their own; their own characteristics and properties.
This begs the question, how much of each element contributes to the final outcome of ‘things’? Where does one ripple begin and the other end? This back and forth dialogue between the ‘elements’ involved is played out through both the marks made in the print series FRICTION and the push and pull factor between the materials in MATTER.
Printed onto heavy lining paper, the FRICTION monoprints are a direct ‘reflection’ of the way Emma likes to experiment with mark making. Through various techniques of application and removal of the ink on the plate, the material works with and against her movements, spreading, sticking and collecting in places, creating embossed surfaces’, which are then directly transferred from pallet to paper.
MATTER illustrates a process much slower and more evolutionary. The various processes undergone are costly in time, and can be quite complicated. Meaning there are often periods where Emma is separated from the object for hours or days. Transformations involve processes such as heating, cooling, molding and stretching which nurture their final shape and personality.
Just as much as we try to control the elements, they always have the ability to take some control back by themselves.
Emma therefore wishes for you to wonder over the meaning of an ‘element’ and a ‘process’, and invites you to investigate these animations and arguments played out through her mixed media show.
