The 7 Year Itch Talk:
While the world didn't turn evil just yesterday, the last couple of years have made many of us feel the need to “do something”. In the wake of Brexit, Trump, Syria, right-wing populism, fake news, content bubbles, tightening borders and closing minds, also many musicians have raised political themes and political initiatives have grown from the music scene.
What does this have to do with us, as musicians, artists, writers, and curators? And, more importantly, what can we do in response? What role can/does music play? What agency to affect change do musicians, festival organizers, and others involved in music culture have?
On the festival’s opening night, and in line with this year’s theme “The 7 Year Itch”, we will discuss questions dealing with pop music’s position within politically difficult times. Can music be a tool to challenge heteronormative, racist and capitalist power structures? If yes, how can we make that change happen?
