On the exhibition:
The possibilities to visually represent oneself have never been greater. We all draw our own portraits in real time and they are constantly evolving. This popularization and transformation of portray culture has motivated Jiyeon Kim to initiate «City of singles — Portraits of Tinders». in order to investigate visual self-portraits of our own personalities.
Tinder images shed light on how we represent ourselves, allowing deep insights about subconscious motivations, desires or dreams. Tinder is used by more than 50 million people every month. In this virtual world many important things manifest themselves: new forms of relationships, lifestyles, or local trends and ways of using personal information.
The app incorporates many contradictions such as the frequently visualized desire for lasting and meaningful human connection and the almost negligible amount of time users spend on an individual counterpart. A swipe takes not more than the fraction of a second. How do we portray ourselves in order to not get «swiped away» by peers?
Probably, the dating application Tinder can be seen as an ideal type of how we initialize modern relationships, which are driven by the almost desperate need for community while the share of non-connective interactions is increasing.
Jiyeon Kim is displaying 50 paintings (50cmx50cm) with acrylic on canvas. Individuals on the painting have a different name and age as in real life. The 50 paintings also relate to anonymity, with which we are confronted in the virtual world.
